About Helsinki

About Helsinki
Welcome to Helsinki — the northern capital by the sea, where modern Nordic design, historical architecture, cozy cafés, and Finnish sauna culture meet the calm atmosphere of late autumn.
For Othello players visiting from around the world for the 48th World Othello Championship, Helsinki offers something very fitting: a peaceful, thoughtful city with excellent public transport, beautiful seaside views, and many comfortable places to relax between games.
November in Helsinki is already winter-like. The days are shorter, the air is crisp, and temperatures are usually around 0°C to +5°C (32–41°F), although colder weather and snow are possible. The atmosphere is calm and cozy rather than busy and crowded — perfect for long conversations, analysis sessions, and enjoying Finnish culture.
What to Wear
If you plan to explore the city before or after the tournament games, good clothing is important.
Recommended:
Warm winter jacket or insulated coat
Waterproof shoes or boots with good grip
Gloves, scarf, and warm hat
Layers (sweater or fleece under your jacket)
Small umbrella or rain-resistant clothing
The sea wind in Helsinki can feel colder than the temperature suggests, especially near the harbor and islands.
Recommended Places to Visit
Senate Square & Helsinki Cathedral
The historical heart of Helsinki, surrounded by elegant neoclassical buildings and the famous white cathedral overlooking the city. Beautiful both during daytime and in the evening lights.
Suomenlinna Sea Fortress
A UNESCO World Heritage Site located on islands just outside the city center, reachable by ferry from Market Square. Even in late autumn and winter, it is one of Helsinki’s most memorable experiences: stone walls, old cannons, sea views, cafés, and peaceful walking paths.
Market Square & Old Market Hall
Near the harbor you can find Finnish food, warm drinks, souvenirs, salmon soup, pastries, and local specialties. November weather makes the warm indoor market hall especially inviting.
Finnish Sauna Experience
A visit to Finland is not complete without trying a sauna. Public saunas such as Löyly or Allas Sea Pool are popular among visitors and locals alike. Some brave guests even try cold sea swimming before returning to the warmth of the sauna.
Oodi Library
One of the most admired modern libraries in the world — warm, modern, quiet, and excellent for relaxing, reading, or casual meetings with friends from the Othello community.
Walk Through Helsinki Neighborhoods
Areas such as Punavuori, Töölö, Kallio, and Kruununhaka are wonderful for slow walks, cafés, photography, and experiencing everyday Nordic city life.
Tips for Othello Players
Helsinki public transport is excellent and easy to use. Most Finns speak very good English. Cafés are warm and comfortable places for post-game analysis. Finnish people may seem quiet at first, but are usually very friendly and helpful. November evenings become dark early — but this also creates a very cozy Nordic atmosphere with lights, cafés, and winter scenery.
Most importantly: enjoy both the competition and the experience of meeting Othello friends from around the world in one of Northern Europe’s most unique capitals.
